Description

Imposter syndrome is common among helping professionals, especially those working in high-responsibility, high-stress environments where performance is closely monitored and mistakes are often emphasized more than competence. Despite training and experience many clinicians privately struggle with persistent self-doubt, feelings of inadequacy, and difficulty internalizing success.

This training provides helping professionals with a clear, clinically grounded understanding of imposter syndrome as both an internal psychological experience and a contextual response to professional environments. Participants will explore how imposter syndrome presents in clinicians and clients, how it intersects with burnout, shame, perfectionism, and trauma, and how it can impair confidence, decision-making, and professional identity. This training will also introduce evidence-informed assessment strategies and practical interventions that clinicians can use both personally and in clinical practice.

Learning Objectives

Objective 1: Define imposter syndrome and describe its core cognitive, emotional, and behavioral features as they present in mental health professionals and clinical populations.

Objective 2: Differentiate imposter syndrome from related constructs such as low self-esteem, anxiety, perfectionism, and burnout.

Objective 3: Explain how professional environments, systemic pressures, and role expectations can contribute to the development and maintenance of imposter syndrome.

Objective 4: Select and recommend evidence-informed strategies for addressing imposter syndrome in themselves and their clients, including cognitive, relational, and compassion-based interventions.
